These scholarships are for high school seniors and collegiate students who are members, or whose parents or grandparents, for at least two consecutive years. BEEF 101 in Washington County

ACA Director of Education and Outreach Ali Cantrell spoke to Washington County High School about Beef 101 and the beef cookoff today. Washington County has won the Alabama Jr. & Sr. High School Beef Cookoff multiple times with their past teacher, Janis Price. They now have a new teacher named Mrs. Behlen that wants to continue the tradition of teaching her students about the beef industry as well as participate in the beef cookoff.

Fall Youth Field Day Success

One week ago today we held our Fall Junior Field Day at CK Cattle in Hope Hull. We had a great turnout of around 60 youth who got BQA certified, learned about bull selection and development, herd health, calving, and much more. A special thanks to CK Cattle for hosting and sponsoring our meal and to our many speakers who spent the day with us!

BEEF at Ag Roundup

ACA staffer Ali Cantrell will host a tailgate at Ag Roundup this Saturday prior to the Auburn V. Missouri Homecoming game. She and the Collegiate Cattlemen’s Association will be serving brisket samples and giving out beef swag. Come by and see them if you’re gonna be on the Plains!

YCLP Council Heads to America’s Heartland

This week the YCLP Council will be on our industry trip to Nebraska. We have a great trip lined out full of educational and fun tours that will expose our council members to different parts of the beef industry that are not as common in the Southeast. Council members will have the opportunity to see the University of Nebraska-Lincoln cattle research farm, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, Neogen Corporate office, US Meat Animal Research Center, Mead Cattle Company, Chief Ethanol Plant and Drinnin Cattle Company.

This will be an outstanding experience for council members David Daniel, Katie Sowell, Will Bullen, Logan Whatley, Will Gotcher and Ryan Kennedy. Wish us safe travels!

OCTOBER BEEF MONTH RUNDOWN

Beef Month is a time-honored tradition here in Alabama, and as a grassroots organization, we love to see Cattlemen’s Associations get creative in their celebrations. This October Beef Month, we have a friendly competition in store for our County Chapters. The ACA wants to see which of our counties in Alabama can celebrate Beef Month the best, so get your planning mode activated and your volunteers in place for our search for the best County Cattlemen’s Association of Beef Month!

Every event that your chapter participates in within the local community will count as points towards the competition. The county with the most points by November 1, 2022 will be declared the Cattlemen of Beef Month.

Here’s dates to keep in mind for the month-long celebration:

• September 26 – October 31: Bama’s Best Beef Competition
• October 2: BEEF at Talladega Superspeedway
• October 1 – 8: Mobtown Burger Week
• October 2 – 7: Beef Week in Alabama
  •  October 3: $5 off the “Holy Cow Burger” at Bill E’s in Fairhope, AL

The Bama Beef Events Calendar (www.BamaBeef.org/Events) is beginning to fill up with activities as we look toward the fall months. The Producer Education tab has been updated recently with Beef Systems Short Courses and Alabama Grazing Academy information, as well as the Cattlemen’s Activities. As we get closer to fall, all of the tabs (especially the sales!) will start to fill up, so check it daily to make sure you don’t miss an event near you!

SLE NEWS 

The Southeastern Livestock Exposition is steadily preparing for the 2023 PRCA rodeo in Montgomery! If you or your business would like to support the mission of the SLE through sponsorship, please reach out to Sarah Hunter by emailing shunter@bamabeef.org. She can send you information regarding the different sponsorship levels available for the upcoming rodeo. 

The annual SLE Membership Meeting will take place on September 29 where exciting announcements will be made about the 2023 SLE Rodeo and new officers and board members will be elected to serve!

APPLY FOR NCBA CONVENTION INTERNSHIP

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is offering collegestudents a unique behind-the-scenes experience through its annual convention internship program. The 2023 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, the largest annual meeting of the U.S. beef cattle industry, will take place Feb. 1-3, 2023, in New Orleans. 

Up to 18 interns will be selected and will be responsible for setting up the demonstration arena, assisting at committee meetings and Cattlemen’s College, participating in the NCBA booth, and posting on social media. NCBA will strive to provide students time to maximize industry networking.

Student interns must be able to work Jan. 29 – Feb. 4, 2023, provide their own transportation to New Orleans, and be at least a junior-level college student at an accredited university at the time of the event. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, preferably have a background in, or working knowledge of, the cattle and/or beef industry, and have experience with social media.

Interested students must complete an online Student Internship Application and submit college transcripts, two letters of recommendation and a resume. The application deadline is Oct. 21, 2022. For more information, contact Grace Webb at gwebb@beef.org.

SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND NCBA CONVENTION 

The 2023 Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show is headed to the Big Easy, and funding is available to offset some costs for producers. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is offering a variety of scholarships and grants to help producers attend CattleCon23, which will be held Feb. 1-3, 2023, in New Orleans. 

Scholarship recipients receive a complimentary Education Package registration and discounted housing accommodations for three nights, Feb. 1-3, 2023. Scholarships will be awarded to up to five beef cattle industry members, up to three young beef producers, and up to three students (currently enrolled in classes) in the industry.Applications for all scholarship categories are due by Sept. 23, 2022, and will be evaluated based on eligibility and answers to application questions.

In addition to the scholarship program, NCBA also offers the Rancher Resilience Grant, which is designed to support cattle producer attendance at impactful education events, such as Cattlemen’s College held prior to convention. Administered by NCBA, the grant is made possible by a partnership between the National Cattlemen’s Foundation and Cargill Protein. To apply for a grant to cover registration costs and two nights hotel, visit  www.ncba.org/producers/rancher-resilience-grant. Cattlemen’s College will be an event option once convention registration opens in October.

We would like to welcome Cynthia Jancaterino to the Alabama Cattlemen’s staff team! Cynthia joins us as The MOOseum Coordinator with many years of experience in tourism and an affinity for the beef industry. A Montgomery native who has lived here all of her life, Cynthia has two grown children— daughter, Chava, and son, Benjamin. “I may be new to the ACA but not to beef,” she said. “One of my most cherished childhood memories is of being with my dad, grilling steak on Saturday nights. My son is now the grill master, and steak is still a meal I look forward to! I am truly excited to learn more about the ACA and the people who make it great!”

In addition to managing The MOOseum operations, Cynthia will also be the friendly voice you hear when you call the Cattlemen’s Association. Join us in welcoming Cynthia to Team ACA!

Montgomery Stockyard Hosts Last Weekly Sale

On Monday, August 22, Montgomery Stockyards hosted its last regular weekly sale. ACA staffers Erin Beasley, Reid McGuire and Kayla Greer enjoyed stopping by the market that’s been operating since 1958. “We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of our customers who have trusted us to market their cattle in our weekly sales,” market owner Jerry Etheredge said. “We would also like to say thank you to our buyers who helped make MSY a competitive market. We have been very fortunate to have some of the very best sit around the ring here over the years.”

While the Stockyard Cafe will remain open, Montgomery Stockyards will only operate board sales by video, through DVAuction, moving forward. Thank you, MSY, for more than 65 years of dedicated service to Alabama’s beef cattle industry.

BEEF 101 on Friday

This Friday, the Alabama Beef Checkoff Program will host a Beef 101 for 35 Ben E. Keith sales representatives at Auburn University. These sales reps will get a better picture of what branded beef programs are about and a detailed description of the pasture to plate story. Chambers County Cattleman Jim Collins will be coming to speak to them that morning about his operation before they move on to the meat lab to meet with AU Meat Lab Manager Barney Wilborn and Regional Extension Agent Dr. Alex Tigue.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is offering a variety of scholarships and grants to help producers attend CattleCon23, which will be held Feb. 1-3, 2023, in New Orleans. 

Scholarship recipients receive a complimentary Education Package registration and discounted housing accommodations for three nights, Feb. 1-3, 2023. Scholarships will be awarded to up to five beef cattle industry members, up to three young beef producers, and up to three students (currently enrolled in classes) in the industry. Applications for all scholarship categories are due by Sept. 23, 2022, and will be evaluated based on eligibility and answers to application questions.

In addition to the scholarship program, NCBA also offers the Rancher Resilience Grant, which is designed to support cattle producer attendance at impactful education events, such as Cattlemen’s College held prior to convention. Administered by NCBA, the grant is made possible by a partnership between the National Cattlemen’s Foundation and Cargill Protein. To apply for a grant to cover registration costs and two nights hotel, visit  www.ncba.org/producers/rancher-resilience-grant. Cattlemen’s College will be an event option once convention registration opens in October.

As we get closer to fall, all of the tabs (especially the sales!) will start to fill up, so check it daily to make sure you don’t miss an event near you!

APPLY FOR NCBA CONVENTION INTERNSHIP

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is offering collegestudents a unique behind-the-scenes experience through its annual convention internship program. The 2023 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, the largest annual meeting of the U.S. beef cattle industry, will take place Feb. 1-3, 2023, in New Orleans. 

Up to 18 interns will be selected and will be responsible for setting up the demonstration arena, assisting at committee meetings and Cattlemen’s College, participating in the NCBA booth, and posting on social media. NCBA will strive to provide students time to maximize industry networking.

Student interns must be able to work Jan. 29 – Feb. 4, 2023, provide their own transportation to New Orleans, and be at least a junior-level college student at an accredited university at the time of the event. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, preferably have a background in, or working knowledge of, the cattle and/or beef industry, and have experience with social media.

Interested students must complete an online Student Internship Application and submit college transcripts, two letters of recommendation and a resume. The application deadline is Oct. 21, 2022. For more information, contact Grace Webb at gwebb@beef.org.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

Final notices will hit mailboxes soon— encourage members to renew and help us get to 10,000 members. We are so close to that goal! As of today, the ACA is proud to represent 9,352 members across the state. Board members, we will see you tomorrow for the August Board of Directors Meeting— August 18 at 10 a.m.

During the board meeting tomorrow, Ali Cantrell will have October Beef Month Boxes available for any county attending. If you are not able to attend or you need some extra goodies to celebrate Beef Month, contact Ali.

Birmingham Barons Tabling Night

On Friday, August 19, Jefferson County Cattlemen’s Association, along with ACA Director of Education & Outreach Ali Cantrell, will be hosting a tabling night at Birmingham Barons stadium. They will be serving steak samples during the game and giving out beef swag to all attending. According to the Barons stadium there should be at least 3,500 at least in attendance that night. This is all part of our season sponsorship with the Barons where we have an Nicely Done, Beef ad running during the fourth inning of every home game with a cowboy cam to follow.

Producer Education Events

Last week ACA Director of Field Services Reid McGuire attended the Gulf Coast Cattlemen’s Conference in Atmore. There was a great turnout and attendees got to hear from some excellent speakers who covered topics such as forages, financial management, and markets. It was a great opportunity to visit with existing members as well as promote the association. 

Reid, along with Erin Beasley who spoke on on the local beef sales panel, also attended the Stockmanship and Stewardship event at Auburn University this past weekend. Attendance was strong, with almost 50 people attending the BQA certification class. It was very encouraging to see this kind of enthusiasm for improving management practices and producing a safe, quality product!

FALL YOUTH FIELD DAY

Save the date for our Fall Youth Field Day— September 14, 2022 at CK Cattle in Hope Hull, AL. Youth will gather from 9 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. and will discuss bull selection, bull development, understanding EPD’s, cool season forages and more. Checkoff Council – Set to Meet

On Thursday, members of the Alabama Beef Checkoff Council will gather at the ACA for its quarterly meeting and update from staff. The crew will hear reports from second quarter programming, look ahead to third quarter lineups and review research proposals for funding. We look forward to a productive meeting with the council as we work together to put your checkoff dollars to work in Alabama!

YOUNG CATTLEMEN’S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM CLASS IX SESSION 2

This weekend the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) Class IX traveled to the Wiregrass for tours of the industry and growth in leadership development. The group visited with Regional Vice President Bill Walding and toured the Wiregrass Research and Extension Center. They spent time doing leadership development led by Micah Johnson of Houston County Extension. Florida Cattlemen’s President Pat Durden, who has participated in young producer leadership training, shared insight with the group and then they wrapped up the weekend with a tour at the farm of Max Bozeman in Elba, Alabama. A huge thanks goes to all of our hosts and speakers for making this a special weekend!

Cattle enthusiasts will have the option to participate in Auburn’s Beef 201 program offering education in feeder grading, value-added marketing concepts, evaluation of harvest ready cattle, fabrication of carcasses combined with economic analysis, and off the farm locally produced niche market opportunities. Topics include: Being a beef industry advocate, beef imports/exports and the roles they play in market prices, market outlook/price protection opportunities, reducing input costs, saving money on your fertilizer bill, managing bahiagrass and winter annuals, and stockpiling bahiagrass. A full vendor trade show will be incorporated.

2022 Regional Cattlemen’s Cookouts

That’s a wrap— regional meetings are in the books! We have enjoyed delicious food, fun giveaways and some very welcomed fellowship at our Regional Cattlemen’s Cookouts in Grove Hill, Troy, Moundville, Wetumpka, Moulton and Guntersville throughout the summer months. What a great time to visit with members across the state, share association and checkoff updates and learn about the activities happening across the different regions. Thanks to all who joined us for these fun and informative sessions. We’re already looking forward to next year’s events!

This week ACA Director of Field Services and AJCA State Adviser Reid McGuire hosted the AJCA Board of Directors at the ACA office for its summer meeting. The group discussed goals for the year, 2022 Round-Up, and began planning the Fall Youth Field Day, schedule for mid-September. Special thanks to Montgomery County Cattlemen’s President-Elect Eddie Westbrook and wife, Anita, for hosting us Friday evening for a meal, and Jacee May of Corteva Agriscience for coming to do professional development training with the young leaders!

Child Nutrition Professional Development

ACA Director of Education & Outreach Ali Cantrell will head to different Child Nutrition Professional Development programs in Birmingham on August 4, 9, & 10. She will speak on preparing and serving beef as part of school nutrition programs. She will present to Homewood, Vestavia, Pelham, Midfield, Oxford City, Jacksonville and Alabaster City school systems.

Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program Class IX Session 2

Powell Awarded 2022 Checkoff Visionary Award

Dr. Billy Powell of Washington County, Alabama was presented with the Cattlemen’s Beef Board’s second annual Beef Checkoff Visionary Award during the General Session of the 2022 Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting in Reno, Nevada. This honor recognizes an individual in the beef industry who has demonstrated exemplary support of and commitment to the Checkoff’s goals and vision.

Speaking of Reno, ACA is represented at NCBA Summer Meeting. ACA President-Elect Chuck Madaris is representing ACA in the policy meetings while President Jim Jordan sits in meetings about beef checkoff programming. Bill Lipscomb, who represents Alabama on the Cattlemen’s Beef Board, is also in attendance, along with Executive Vice President Erin Beasley.

2022 REGIONAL CATTLEMEN’S COOKOUTS

We have enjoyed delicious food, fun giveaways and some very welcomed fellowship at the first five of our Regional Cattlemen’s Cookouts in Grove Hill, Troy, Moundville, Wetumpka and Moulton. ACA in MS

ACA Director of Education & Outreach Ali Cantrell traveled to Biloxi, MS this weekend to be a judge for their Discussion Meet competition. Ali has competed in this competition before with the Alabama Farmers Federation, and she was excited to be invited to judge at Mississippi Farm Bureau. It was a great competition, and Ali had the opportunity to meet with producers that are on the Mississippi and Alabama line and share membership with ACA and Mississippi Cattlemen’s.

Visiting Stockyards

This week ACA Director of Field Services Reid McGuire had the opportunity to make stockyard visits throughout the state. He enjoyed getting to connect with producers at weekly sales and to better understand the challenges they are facing. He’ll be making more visits as board sales begin to ramp up this fall and would love to visit with you about how we’re putting checkoff dollars to work!

BEEF 101, on the Menu!

This Friday, Ali will be hosting a Beef 101 for Ben E. Keith foodservice sales representatives. There will be 30 sales reps in attendance and then another 30 sales reps will be coming to attend the August 26 Beef 101. These sales reps will be learning about the Pasture to Plate story and get a greater understanding of the beef cuts that they sell on a daily basis.

AJCA Round-Up Survey

This week we sent out a survey to our Round-Up participants and parents. We appreciate the great feedback we have already received, and are looking forward to more in the upcoming week. We will discuss the results and any improvements we can make at our upcoming Junior Board meeting. Reid McGuire recently joined the ACA to serve as Director of Field Services— the position left vacant by Morgan Desselle. McGuire, a native of Waverly, AL grew up participating in the Alabama Junior Cattlemen’s Association (AJCA), including serving on the AJCA Board of Directors. He is a graduate of Oklahoma State University where he participated in the Livestock Judging Team. Most recently, McGuire has worked in sales with Gallagher. His job with the ACA will include managing the Alabama Junior Cattlemen’s Association and the Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP), executing producer checkoff programming and representing the association at cattle industry events across the state. Be sure to say hi next time you see him out and about!

Round-Up Recap!

The 16^th Annual AJCA Round-Up is in the books! The Round-Up is more than a calf show. There are multiple educational contest that happen throughout the weekend. The fun kick off on Thursday as youth and families join us in the Teague and Lewis barns for food and entertainment— including bouncy houses and a volleyball tournament. Friday was full of contests, from grooming, sales talk, and cooking competitions— we had it all! Saturday and Sunday brought the Market Show, Showmanship Contest and Breeding Heifer Show.

We would like to thank all the hands that played a part in making sure this weekend was a success for the youth! This event would not be possible without the sponsors and volunteers! We would also like to congratulate all the exhibitors on their achievements throughout the weekend!

2022 REGIONAL CATTLEMEN’S COOKOUTS

We have enjoyed delicious food, fun giveaways and some very welcomed fellowship at the first five of our Regional Cattlemen’s Cookouts in Grove Hill, Troy, Moundville, Wetumpka and Moulton. Talkin’ Beef

ACA Director of Education & Outreach Ali Cantrell will be speaking at the ALACTE Conference in Mobile on Thursday to Family and Consumer Science teachers. She will be highlighting the Beef 101 programs that we offer as well as discussing the 2023 Alabama Junior & Senior High School Beef Cook-off. This contest will be held on April 14, 2023 at Jefferson State Community College.

Next week, Ali will travel to Destin on Monday and Tuesday to attend the Alabama Grocers Association Convention. She will be hosting a booth in the trade show and talking with retailers about how the beef checkoff can help their business and educate their employees about their products.

Mark your calendars for August 12-13, 2022, to partake in the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) premiere Stockmanship & Stewardship educational experience at the Auburn University Equestrian Center.

The program will feature low-stress cattle handling demonstrations, Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Educational certification, facility design sessions, industry updates and your choice of additional specialized education. The program sponsored by the NCBA, Merck Animal Health, and the Beef Checkoff-funded National Beef Quality Assurance program will allow attendees the opportunity to participate in educational sessions, a local beef cattle tour and a valuable networking reception.

Attendees will learn cutting-edge operation techniques through demonstrations by stockmanship experts Curt Pate and Dr. Ron Gill. Cattle enthusiasts will have the option to participate in Auburn’s Beef 201 program offering education in feeder grading, value-added marketing concepts, evaluation of harvest ready cattle, fabrication of carcasses combined with economic analysis, and off the farm locally produced niche market opportunities. Additionally, participants will be offered sessions on various topics including best-practices in nutrition and Southeast U.S. forage management, tools for improved sustainability, current herd health management concepts, beef advocacy training, and a unique program designed for teen junior cattlemen members.

BAMA BEEF EVENTS CALENDAR
